I have had the Turtle Beach XLC headset for a month now and have a very firm grasp on what it’s all about. First and foremost, I have seen a number of people complaining that the chat is poor. This is because these people did not realize that the game sounds (effects, character voices, music, etc) must be turned down in the game settings menu–and then the chat is controlled by the TV volume. You need chat to be louder than game sounds, right? Well this is how you separate it!

Once properly adjusted, you can easily see why the XLC is an excellent headset and well worth the $29 price tag. In fact, the audio quality is outstanding for such a low price tag! Mic chat is clear as a bell–both incoming (when set up properly) and outgoing as well. Plus, the noise cancelling earpads are a very welcome feature to have since it allows you to completely focus on the game. For competitive FPS gamers like me, this is extremely useful.

Two things to keep in mind with the XLC:

    1) Be sure to properly configure the game/chat balance as described above.

    2) You must have a headphone jack on your TV (or home sound system receiver) to provide adequate power to the headset speakers. If you don’t have a headphone jack anywhere to power the speakers, then I would strongly recommend the X1 or X11 instead.

I got mine last week and I had the same thing happen. I could not hear anyone talking on the game chat, I was gonna send them back but I gave 1 more try. I found out that your tv volume is the chat volume so just turn the tv volume up, but don’t use the splitter cable that comes with it because that keeps you from turning up the tv volume. You have to turn down the in-game sound a little bit but it does work great. The best headset for less, it’s a must buy if you can’t spend a lot.

I bought this headset because I wanted to be able to play Call of Duty without disturbing my girlfriend. This allows me to do that, but there are a few issues with this headset. First, I’ll mention the good. I can play with the TV muted so I’m not bothering anyone with sounds of explosions and gunfire and the sound quality is amazing. Yep, sounds awesome so far. BUT… This thing sucks. First off, the cords (yep theres two cords coming off of this thing one plugs into the remote and the other has to plug into the back of your TV) tangle themselves up all the time. Add the “Plug and Play” cord into the mix and you have a knot bigger than the one your 2 year old son makes on his fishing pole. If this was the only problem, I would strongly reccomend this product, but the next two problems ruin it for me. There is only one volume control on the headset. That means you cant turn up the chat volume independently from the game volume. When I first tried it out, I could hear the game audio, which sounded amazing, but I couldnt hear a damn bit of chat. My teammate’s yells of warning did me no good at all because i couldnt hear a thing over the background noise, even when there was no gunfire or explosions going off. So, I checked the manual. It told me to turn down the in-game volume level so the chat would stick out more. So I did that and now I can hear the chat just fine. Problem solved? Nope. Now the in-game volume is too quiet. Can I hear it on my stereo? Nope. The sound deadening earmuffs make sure that wont happen. So basically you get the choice of hearing the game or the chat.

To sum it all up, this thing would be awesome if I could hear both game and chat, and if I didnt have a million feet of cord all tangled up in front of my TV. Best bet? Use the original headset, or put up a ton of cash for a better model like the X1.

  • Like most people, I found that you had trouble hearing the in-game chat. I had to use the splitter that was included if you dont have a TV with a headphone option, and found that hooking the headphones up to the audio output and the game to the input fixes that problem. This product also works well as just a pair of headphones for music, movies, etc. This is definitely a great product for such a cheap price. If you experience any problems, just read the user manual and double check your hookups. For those buying this product, just make sure you have a TV with the A/V set or a headphone jack on it. The product includes the headset attached to a approx. 13.5′ cord, a splitter for a TV with A/V input/output setup, and of course, the User Manual.

  • let me first say that i have been playing on Xboxlive for 4-5 years, and i have been through all different kinds of headsets. right when xboxlive cam to the xbox 360 there were no good headsets that were affordable. even now the headsets they make are not made well. So i have talked with all of my friends on-line and they thought it was time for every one to get some better headsets. so i started looking for a “pro” headset. i looked into many brands (turtle beach, triton, x-factor, and so on….).

xbox 360 standard headset cost $21.80 after tax. doesn’t look like it was made well. looks kinda crappy even. and only last 5 or 6 months of play (i even asked the people that worked at gaming stores). turtle beach company is kinda the first level of pro headsets. not the best but you get a good idea what kinda of sets are better then others.

    Pros: of this headset:

    1) great for shooters because you can hear people walking up behind you, hears vehicles all over the maps, and i imagine for role playing games, as well as any type of exploring games.

    2) works much better then the xbox 360 brand name headsets.

    3) only costs $29.99.

    4) great for late night gaming.

    5) i like to play late so i turn the volume off on my tv and have all the sound come through the headphones.

    Cons: of the headset

    1) not a headset for everyone.

    2) number one complaint is that you can’t adjust the voices from the game play sounds (they adjust at the same rate, so you here everything together) ideally you would want the voices louder then the surrounding game play.

    3) the the headset is kinda small on your head because the earphones are small.

    4) i would have liked to adjust the volume louder then were its maximum.

if you are looking for a pro headset then i would recommend you do your research before buying any headset.

i recommend you look at their website before you buy one.

for the money i suggest you get this headset over the standard xbox 360 headset.
